About us
Confeitaria de Cinema was founded in the late 1990s by short films directors who met in the Film School at the University of São Paulo and who made films such as Sex and Karate, Of Dead Roses, Lyrics and Mutant.., which was selected for the International Festival of Clermont-Ferrand. Already at that time, they had in common the desire to produce works of different genres and formats that had an instigating audiovisual language, a contemporary dramaturgy and relevance for the cultural environment, society and the film market.
Since then, the production company has made three feature films: Body (2007), selected for the International Festivals in Montreal, India, Palm Springs and awarded in Los Angeles as Best Foreign Film, also being one of the five films chosen by the public at the São Paulo International Film Festival; Super Nothing (2013), selected for the International Festivals of Amiens, Chicago, Mar Del Prata and awarded as best film at New Path Section at Festival do Rio and as best actor in Gramado; Second Half (2023), selected for the International Festivals of Boston and Punta del Leste where it received the award for Best Latin American film. It also produced the fiction series At the Table (2023, 11 episodes).
Confeitaria de Cinema also produced four documentary feature films: Waiting for Telê (2010), Intervention (2017), #Andnowwhat (2020) and Jair Rodrigues – Let Them Talk (2022). The films went to Festivals in Rio, Brasília, São Paulo, Tiradentes, Chicago and Toulouse. It also produced two documentaries for TV: Queen Hortencia & Magic Paula (2014) and 800M (2016).
All Confeitaria de Cinema productions were recognized by specialized critics, and some caused a relevant impact. Body, in addition to being a competent thriller, was considered the ideal metaphor film to discuss the non-trial of the military dictatorship, being shown at the Opening of the section works of the Federal Truth Commission. Intervention is considered the first film to address the phenomenon of the recent emergence of the extreme right in Brazil. #Andnowwhat is considered by many critics as the best image of the failure of the Brazilian left to communicate with the popular classes. The At the Table series takes the possibilities of dialogue, the relationship between two characters and shot/reverse shot to the limit. This ability to reflect on our society within an original dramaturgy is present in all of our films, commercially shown in theaters and on different platforms and programmers.
The production company has been dedicated to international co-productions such as Super Nothing, a co-production between Brazil and Mexico and Second Half, a co-production between Brazil and Germany. Currently, it is developing the project The Architect, a co-production involving Brazil, Mexico and Italy.
The main directors of the company are Rubens Rewald, Rossana Foglia, Tales Ab´Sáber and Rodolfo Moreno.
